Fostering
collaboration and trust between
working teams of talent is essential
to a project’s
success.

he process
of building or renovating a home
is deceptively complex. Many homeowners
make the mistake of believing that
they can avoid the expense of a
general contractor or a design
professional by being more “hands
on” in the process. While many
aspects of home improvement are perfectly
manageable by the owner, others are
fraught with potential problems and
a steady stream of decisions and
judgment calls, the answers for which
require years of experience and expertise.
Setting forth with
the right team of talent is crucial
to the success of a project. Like
a well oiled engine, builders, contractors,
architects, and designers have reciprocal
relationships that have bearing on
the proper efficiency and smoothness
of a job. Each “part” is
integral to the functionality and
must have a proper fit to move the
project forward. Often, there are
not clear endings or beginnings for
specific industry contribution as
a project rolls out. For example,
there are times when early stage
plumbing or electrical decisions
will have an impact on interior design
or times when the architectural drafts
conflict with the ideal execution
of construction. As a result, renovation
can be a bit like an expedition into
parts unknown. All parties must be
able to think on their feet and be
willing (at times) to make unexpected
twists and turns in the plan for
the benefit of the final result.
The simple concept of having diverse
expertise available in a timely manner
for these issues cannot be underestimated.
Never-ending projects quickly grow
out of budget and lose steam when
questions go unanswered.
Ultimately,
a beautifully finished kitchen that
is awkward to use or that doesn’t
flow well for entertaining is just
as disappointing as a highly functional
kitchen that feels uninspired or
is simply a lonely place to prepare
a meal. It is for this reason that
fostering collaboration and trust
between working teams of talent is
essential to a project’s
success.
This is why I also
function in a consultative capacity
with Gentry
Remodeling. I’m familiar with
Jon Word’s team, their communication
style and the “Gentry” vision
for how his projects should flow
and execute. I have great respect
for his work ethic and his ability
to think through to a finished concept.
I’ve never been to a work site
when I didn’t hear occasional
laughter or whistling - a sure sign
that people are happy and enjoying
their craft.
